Taking More Creative Risks

Emerging Artists are right on the brink of something big- it might be consistent sales, recognition, a collectible style… or total failure. This seems like the worst time ever for taking risks artistically right? The pressure is on and we need to cosplay having our shit together 24/7. This weeks blog makes a case for taking artistic risks anyway & how that can actually fast track your path toward success.

If You BOMB, it’s not a big deal.

The beginning of your Art Career is all about calibrating success and making adjustments. You have to be willing to take risks in order to do that. The good news is- there really isn’t as much pressure as you may think. The stakes aren’t high. An Emerging Career is the perfect moment for experimentation! You aren’t well known for a specific style yet. Use that freedom and lack of recognition to really play and dial in your unique aesthetic. If you produce something that’s less than perfect- no problem! Turn that into a story, leverage it toward a new creation, or simply chalk it up as a learning experience. Use this time to think outside the box & try different approaches.

You Could Be On To Something

If you suffer from perfectionism- this is your hall pass to throw caution to the wind. Good ideas need a trial and error period- and your latest hit of inspiration just might be a thread worth following. Becoming curious and taking risks with your work will lead you into unexplored territory- sometimes for the worse- but occasionally magic happens! Make space in your practice for following your instincts- you could be on to something exceptional. If you don’t allow yourself the space & grace to explore- you might be missing out on your next huge break through.

You’ll Regret (only) Making Safe Art

Yes careers often depend on making distinctive, collectible, well curated art. We need to manufacture safety as professionals for financial security. There’s no shame in staying on brand, keeping things consistent. That’s how you grow. However- if that’s ALL you’re doing- you’ll come to resent playing it safe. Pretend you’re older & wiser- you’re looking back on your career as an Artist. What do you wish you had created? What risks would you have taken? What projects would you really regret skipping? Don’t let those opportunities pass you by! Make time for personal art & creative satisfaction.

You Don’t Have to Share Everything

Let’s talk about perfectionism a little more. So many of us feel held back and smothered by our own fear of inadequacy. Sometimes it’s helpful to be reminded that you don’t have to share everything you create. You can absolutely throw paint or pottery around- make something crazy- regress back to being a kid- and keep it to yourself. The pressure to share every aspect of our creative process can become incredibly stifling… Adding even more undue pressure to our expectations around success. Consider keeping some things to yourself. Especially when you’re in the experimental phase of creation. If you really struggle with perfectionism- try making art that sucks (do it on purpose) then destroy it. Burn it, rip it up, get therapeutic with it. Confronting your fear head on can be a massive relief!
