Time Is On Your Side

Focus is so very important in a world full of distractions and opportunity.

How we structure each day can be as important as what we do with it. Today we’re going to analyze how time gets spent- and where our attention goes. The concept of quality over quantity is key here- and it’s helpful to think of block scheduling as a rolling state of meditation rather than an oppressive system. Studies show that we can only stay truly focused on a task for about 25 minutes. Beyond that, the mind starts to wander and fragments our attention.

Fortunately, we don’t need to take long breaks before optimal focus becomes available. A simple 5 minute break can recharge your attention span and allow for more productivity. Use breaks wisely, move your body, do something you enjoy, hydrate, play a game or find a small indulgence to reward yourself with. Use this loose, unstructured time to do what you enjoy. After that brief period of freeform activity- set the clock for another 25 minutes of undivided focus spent accomplishing your task.

This pattern can set you up for real success and support rapid growth in a short period of time.

Master time by:

  • Focused working in 25 min intervals
  • Removing distractions
  • Scheduling 5 min breaks
  • Choosing simple rewards

Sneaky time wasters:

  • Phone & computer notifications
  • Messy work spaces
  • Interruptions (family, pets, etc)
  • Lack of sleep
  • Trying to multitask

Practice:

  • Close your eyes and focus on only your breath for 2 min. Set a timer.
  • Apply this kind of focus to your 25 min work blocks.
  • If your mind wanders away, gently bring it back and continue.
  • Focus is like a muscle you’re training. Every time you bring it back, it’s getting stronger!
